Wrong Way

Wrong Way is a strategy board game online built around one simple choice on every turn: move your pawn one square, or drop a wall to slow someone else down. The board glows in neon blue and pink on a dark purple background, your pawn is a shiny orb, and the walls light up as you drag them into place. It plays fast, but the decisions get sharp once both sides start building mazes.

In my first quick match I dropped a wall right in front of the AI pawn, and two moves later it had simply walked around the end of it. One wall rarely stops anyone. A smart row of them does.

The rules in one minute

• Get your pawn to the opposite side of the board before your opponent reaches theirs.
• On your turn, tap a highlighted square to move one step, or drag a wall from the tray onto the gap between squares.
• A wall covers two squares. Walls cannot cross each other, and you can never close off every path to a goal.
• If another pawn stands right next to you, you can jump over it. If a wall stands behind it, you step around it diagonally instead.

A two player game uses a 9 by 9 board with 10 walls each. With four players the board grows to 11 by 11, everyone gets 7 walls, and the race is to the golden star square in the center.

Ways to play this strategy board game online

You can treat it as a 2 player board game, a 4 player board game or a solo board game vs AI. Quick match drops you straight into a game against the AI. Vs AI lets you pick the strength: Easy, Normal, Hard or Hardcore, where the computer thinks deeply about every move. 2 players and 4 players are for friends sharing one phone, tablet or computer, and the board turns to face whoever plays next.

Then there are the Levels: 60 of them in six zones of ten, each with its own setup. Some start with walls already on the board, some give the AI more walls than you, and every tenth level is a tougher boss match. Each level awards up to three stars, and a chest waits at the end of every zone.

Powers

A row of powers sits under the board and can swing a close game:

• Hint shows your best move right now.
• Rewind takes back your last move and the AI reply (only against the AI).
• Dash moves your pawn twice in one turn.
• Ghost steps through one wall next to your pawn.
• Hammer smashes any wall on the board.
• Freeze makes your opponent skip a turn.
• +2 Walls adds two walls to your stock.

In same device games each player gets one random power for the match. You also earn coins and XP, collect a daily reward, and unlock new board themes like Candy Pop, Jungle, Ice, Lava and Galaxy, plus pawn styles from Gem to Crown as you level up.

Tips that worked for me

1. Do not spend walls early. Save them for when your opponent is close to the goal.
2. A wall that makes their path longer while barely touching yours is the best kind.
3. Watch your own path before every wall you place. It is easy to trap yourself in a long detour.
